We're Screwing Up By the Numbers
Illegal Immigration is At An All Time High and The Border Patrol is Finally Starting to Talk About it Publicly.
Jason Owens, chief of the US Border Patrol, has said some candid things to CBS News. I’m pretty happy to see that, as we’ve had a need for an honest conversation from someone in the federal government for decades now. In a recent interview with CBS News Owens had this to say:
"Border security is a big piece of national security," he said. "And if we don't know who is coming into our country, and we don't know what their intent is, that is a threat and they're exploiting a vulnerability that's on our border right now."
He’s right. People seem to forget that the 9/11 hijackers got into the US on forged passports or at least passports that were “manipulated in a fraudulent manner.” Someone who comes here illegally hasn’t been vetted. Disease outbreaks have been caused by illegal immigrants who crossed the border without being screened for diseases. And make no mistake about it: A person who crosses the border illegally with no intention to hurt anyone or anything can still cause illness or death in Americans.
And let’s face it, per the same NBC article:
“Customs and Border Protection (CBP) statistics show a tiny fraction of migrants processed by Border Patrol have criminal records in the U.S. — or other countries that share information with American officials — and an even smaller percentage have been convicted of serious crimes. Available data and studies also suggest that migrants in the U.S. illegally do not commit crimes at a higher rate than native born Americans.”
I’m willing to accept that. The thing that people who write these types of articles willingly ignore is that it only takes one. One illegal immigrant can kidnap a child. One illegal immigrant can plant a bomb. Nineteen hijackers killed two thousand people. And let’s not forget about the numbers:
Per the NBC article, over two million people have been apprehended but a hundred and forty thousand have not. The term “tiny percentage” is never defined in the article, so let’s go with one percent as being “tiny”. That comes out to fourteen hundred hardened criminals coming over the border illegally. That’s a dangerous amount. Our leadership gets that:
”Still, top law enforcement officials, including FBI director Christopher Wray, have voiced concerns about criminal actors, including potential terrorists, exploiting the unprecedented levels of migration along the U.S. southern border over the past three years.”
Next time you hear some Dem politician or liberal talking head talking about how illegal immigration isn’t a problem, feel free to mention to them that the FBI Director and the Chief of the Border Patrol both think they’re wrong. They’re probably too brainwashed to listen, but at least you’ll feel better.
And the immigrants that evade capture are doing it with intelligence and cunning:
"Why are they risking their lives and crossing in areas where we can't get to?" Owens asked. "Why are they hiding? What do they have to hide? What are they bringing in? What is their intent? Where are they coming from? We simply don't know the answers to those questions. Those things for us are what represent the threat to our communities."
Right. They’re coming in illegally and in a manner that endangers their own lives. They’re not doing it because they intend to be cute and cuddly. They’re not doing it to make a living. Dead men don’t earn wages. They’re doing it because they’ve got more on the line.
In another article, Owens expressed an opinion about how to stop illegal immigration, or at least slow it down:
"I think we need to take a look at the asylum laws and make it where only people that have a legitimate claim can claim asylum," Owens said in his first sit-down interview in English since assuming the top role at Border Patrol in June 2023. "I think that we need to be able to enforce the immigration laws that are on the books and hold people accountable whenever they choose to break the law."
Asked if was referring to tougher federal policies, Owens said, "Yes."
"If there's no motivation to do it the right way, and the right way, it is causing people to have to wait a little bit longer," Owens said. "Naturally, they're going to choose to come between the ports of entry. We need to take that off the table and make sure everybody's coming through the front door."
Of course, your average liberal would call such a common sense approach racist without looking at the facts. That’s why I’ll never be a liberal.
