Rights, Responsibilities and How, Sometimes, They Aren't the Same Thing
Yes Leftists Do, in Fact, Have a Right to Create and Sell Their Art. That Does Not, However, Equate to A Responsibility of Others to Consume It
The Left likes to talk about intersectionality, so fine. Let’s do that. I exist at the intersection of Political Blogger and Science Fiction and Fantasy review blogger. (And if you’re into Science Fiction or Fantasy, you really should check out my other Stack.) And so, today, we’re going to talk a bit about something that effects both.
There has been on an ongoing push by leftist media outlets for years now to make woke content that people don’t want and then get upset because “the fans weren’t ready for it.” I find this odd. It is the job of a for-profit company (be they movie studio, publisher, comic book publisher, or whatever else) to provide me with a product that I want if they expect me to give them my money. It’s that simple. I’m not going to spend my time and money consuming a product that doesn’t interest me.
If a creator produces a product that I don’t want, that’s fine. I have no right to stop someone from making something I don’t like or even find offensive. Do your thing. Make your stuff. Do your best to sell it. That is your right. It is not your right, however, to have me pay for your product once you let it out into the world. nor am I required to support your work merely because you are making a political point with it.
And no, Inverse, my rejection of your product does not equate to racism, misogyny or homophobia, even if your product is about lesbian space witches. It is your responsibility to impress me with your product, not my responsibility to impress you with my virtue by giving you that which I have worked hard to get.
